Am Rande der Welt

At the Edge of the World

Goran Rebic
At the Edge of the World was filmed in 1991, the year of independence, and 1992, the year of war. One year between life as it was then and life as it is now, between rejoicing and destruction. The civil war in Georgia destroyed the utopia of freedom and left behind a battle field, both in the country itself and in the minds of the Georgians. In Tiflis I met the same people and went to the same places as in the year before. Nothing and nobody was the same. The war in the Caucasus has become a reflection of the tragedy in the Balkans, where I was born. The same killing, triggering the same pain, the same madness, never ceasing. The film is not a political analysis, it conjures up the life that no longer exists."Politics is only the very edge of people. The centre, the visible centre of the people in the film is their faces, their voices, their tears..." The film shows the desperation and helplessness prevailing in Georgia as a yardstick against which to measure the desperation and helplessness of the whole world.
