Farewell

Käthe Kratz
Vienna in the early eighties: Tina comes from a middle-class family. She attends a private school and actually her biggest headache ought to be French grammar. But she is hospitalized in the psychiatric ward of the General Hospital after a suicidal attempt. There, she gets to know Gerhard, an apprentice plumber, who also wanted to do away with himself. He comes from a working class family. They fall for each other. Discharged from the hospital, their different backgrounds make a partnership difficult. Gerhard is fired and finds work in a Youth Center where he constructs a badly needed heating system. But he's swiped the necessary material. The Youth Center is in a middle-class neighborhood and the people there do not approve of them. The cops storm a rock concert. They are also looking for Gerhard. He and Tina pretend to commit suicide in order to get back to the General Hospital. This time they are admitted to different wards. They run away, back to the big city. A documentary love story with the closing of the Youth Center, 'Gassergasse', in the background.
