DOCUMENTARY
Die Insel
The Island
Hans Selikovsky
The ways in which our society enjoys its leisure time can be observed at the Island. This is where many spend their "second
real life," which begins after the workday. A virtual paradise, though a second-hand one: this artificial island is located
in the center of the big city, a utilitarian structure and part of a flood protection system.
During the summer months, the Island is Vienna's Lido, its Copa Cabana, its Florida. If a trip abroad is too expensive, there's
always the Danube Island. The only visible difference is often the currency used to purchase the sangria. The Island attracts
a number of fringe groups, such as graffiti artists who leave their marks on bridge piers. The Island is also a place where
foreigners and guest workers from various lands can enjoy themselves and meld with the Viennese, forming the colorful mixture
of nationalities which is typical of this city.
The Island therefore becomes a part of Vienna where life cannot be hidden away in the private home, where it is lived in the
open for all to see.
