The Hungarian revolution 1956. Judith, an Austrian and her Hungarian friend, tadek, want to escape to Austria. A friend of theirs, a Viennese photgrapher, helps organize their escape. Taddek doesn't appear at the arranged meeting place. Judith and the photographer leave without him for Austria. Years pass withoout a word from Taddek, She marries the photographer and they live in a small town. They are well off. Judith is now about forty-five years old, a high school teacher. Her husband died years ago. One day, Taddek stands before her door. He had spent over 15 years in prison and this was his first trip abroad. He still loves her and expects her to return his love. Now the cause of Taddek's beeing arrested in 1956 and the role played by the photgrapher come to light. Also the latter's death several years ago is explained by the appearance of a lost letter. All this creates a conflict which can't be solved.
