Austrian films at Berlin 2008

 

The line-up of Austrian films at the 58th Berlin Festival is complete: Götz Spielmann's Revanche premieres at the Panorama Special, Heinz Emigholz'; documentary Loos Ornamental is part of the Forum of New Cinema programme. The German-Austrian co-production Heart of Fire by Luigi Falorni has been selected for the Golden Bear competition, Panorama Special will feature Stefan Arsenijevic' Ljubav i drugi zlocini, a German-Serbian-Austrian-Slovenian co-production.

Making sure that nobody notices, Anica organizes her perfect departure from her imperfect life. But life is unpredictable. The only thing Anica didn’t count on was ? love. And it appears in an unexpected way. At the end of the day, Anica will have to decide. Can she believe in love?

Architecture as autobiography: The film presents 27 buildings and spaces designed by Austrian architect Adolf Loos (1870-1933) in the chronological order in which they were built. The viewer will see and learn about the blossoming of Loos? ideas on space and materials and the development of an almost modular style of construction. The film shows all the buildings as they appear today. This makes it a document that records the fate of modern architecture.

The Eritrean struggle for independence, 1980. Ten-year-old Awet has the heart of a warrior. Abandoned as a baby, she grows up in the sheltered atmosphere of a Christian monastery in Asmara. But when she returns to her family, her father brings her to a military battle unit. There is nothing she can do to elude her fate as a child soldier. Nevertheless, Awet vows to oppose this ignoble war with all her strength, and to fight against the fate that menaces her.
