Please Leave Your Husband

Reinhard Schwabenitzky
Please Leave Your Husband is the story of Henriette Hofer, a 33-year-old woman who suddenly, without any previous warning, after five years of marriage, in the dead of the night, and without taking even the bare necessities, leaves her husband. Henriette plans to stand on her own feet and find work and an apartment. She discovers that she no longer loves him and that, despite or because of the considerable affluence which she enjoys with him, she is unhappy. She needs her own feelings of accomplishment, affection, tenderness, she wants to think her own thoughts, have her own goals. She wants to be brash and audacious again, rebellious, courageous - like when she was single. Unforunately for her plans, her husband, Thomas Hofer, around 40, is about to take a big step careerwise. He wants to go into politics, and his "thoroughly intact family" is the center of the campaign's PR strategy. And so, he is ready to use any means necessary to make Henriette stay, he endeavors to keep her disappearance a secret and to get her back with the help of her ambitious parents. But Henriette stands firm and, when she becomes somewhat too generous with her feminine charms, at the same time without wanting to hurt her (ex-)husband, she is the cause of his being driven from the political arena.
