Cannes 2012: Michael Haneke and Ulrich Seidl competing for Palme d'or

 

Memorable moment for Austrian cinema: two of its most outstanding protagonists are contributing to Cannes 65th Palme d’or competition: Michael Haneke with his new film AMOUR starring Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emanuelle Riva and Ulrich Seidl with PARADISE: LOVE the first part of an Ulrich Seidl trilogy.

Georges and Anne are in their eighties. They are cultivated, retired music teachers. Their daughter, who is also a musician, lives abroad with her family. One day, Anne has an attack. The couple's bond of love is severely tested.

On the beaches of Kenya they're known as Sugar Mamas: European women to whom black beach boys offer sex to earn a living. Teresa, a 50-year-old from Austria, travels as a sex tourist to this vacation paradise in search of love /to find love/. She goes from one beach boy to the next, from one disappointment to the next. The first film in Ulrich Seidl's PARADISE trilogy tells of older women and young men, of Europe and Africa, and of the exploited, who have no choice but to victimize other victims.
