«We are all ambivalent.»
Many of Perla's actions can be understood. Not all of them, though. She is an artist and a mother, she loves two men
and has rebelled against a regime; when she makes a decision, it is based on her gut feeling – and most of all, it is her
own decision. In her second feature film, PERLA, Alexandra Makarová has created a powerful and ambivalent character who takes
us back to the times of the Iron Curtain and reminds us of the worlds separated only by a shallow little river on the Austrian
border, and the ways of life it managed to prevent and destroy.
