    Cannes 2025:
    MILITANTROPOS at the Quinzaine des Cinéastes

    MILITANTROPOS, a documentary coproduced by Vienna-based Mischief Films together with Ukraine and France, will celebrate its world premiere at the Cannes Quinzaine des Cinéastes section.
    The directing collective consisting of Yelizaveta Smith, Alina Gorlova and Simon Mozgovyi observes the transformations that make people a part of war and war a part of people.

    Tanja Hausner: European Costume Design
    MOON: nominated European University Film Award

    Lucerne in Switzerland will be hosting the 37th European Film Awards ceremony on December 7, 2024: Austrian costume designer Tanja Hausner will receive the European Excellence Award for her outstanding work in THE DEVIL’S BATH by Veronika Franz & Severin Fiala. And we keep our fingers crossed for Kurdwin Ayub’s MOON, nominated for European University Award.

    A beautiful Austrian presence at the IDFA 2024 closes a strong festival year: ON THE BORDER by Igor Hauzenberger and Gabriela Schild’s observations on the political upheaval in the Tuareg city of Agadez celebrates its world premiere at Frontlight and Dead Angle: Borders. Also screening in Amsterdam: DEAR BEAUTIFUL BELOVED by Juri Rechinsky (Best of Fests) and FAVORITEN by Ruth Beckermann (Signed).

    THE DEVIL'S BATH wins big at the Sitges Cinema Fantàstic Festival


    Excellent news on the Austrian entry for Best International Feature Film: THE DEVIL'S BATH by Veronika Franz & Severin Fiala sweeps three major awards at the Sitges Festival Cinema Fantàstic de Catalunya Oct. 3 to 13), the world’s most prestigious showcase of fantasy and horror movies:
    • Best Feature Film
    • José Luis Guarner Critics' Award
    • Carnet Jove Jury Award

    EFA 2024: 3 films in Feature Film Selection + MOON nominated for European University Film Award

    • MOON by Kurdwin Ayub (WP Locarno),
    • THE DEVIL’S BATH by Veronika Franz & Severin Fiala (WP Berlinale) and
    • THE VILLAGE NEXT TO PARADISE (WP Cannes)
    are the three Austrian films among the 45 films of the EFA Feature Film Selection 2024. MOON is also nominated for European University Film Award.
    EFA Nominations will be announced on November 5.
    The award ceremony takes place in Lucerne on December 7.

    After rave reviews by the international press, Bernhard Wenger’s directorial debut PEACOCK took two of the independent jury awards:

    Locarno77: Kudwin Ayub's MOON crowned by 4 juries

    MOON won four awards at the 77th Locarno Film Festival:

    Special Jury Prize, given to the second best film of the International Competition, worth 30.000 Swiss francs.
    Europa Cinemas Label, awarded from cinema exhibitors providing support for the promotion of the film releases.
    Boccalino d'Oro awarded by the independent film critics.
    Special Mention from the Ecumenical jury.

    PEACOCK at Venice Settimana Internazionale della Critica


    Bernhard Wenger’s directorial debut PEACOCK is one of the contenders of the 39th Venice Settimana della Critica (August 28 to September 7, 2024). Wenger’s first feature film, starring Albrecht Schuch and Julia Franz Richter, was produced by Vienna-based NGF Geyrhalterfilm.

    THE DEVIL’S BATH is the Austrian entry for Best International Feature Film

    Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala’s Berlinale Golden Bear contender, starring Anja Plaschg, is the Austrian entry to the 2024 Oscar race for Best International Feature Film. Inspired by historical records of interrogations, Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala employ the power of beauty and cruelty in THE DEVIL’S BATH to tell a story of confinement and liberation.

    Four early Michael Haneke films restored

    • THREE PATHS TO THE LAKE (1976)
    • LEMMINGS 1 – ARCADES +
    • LEMMINGS 2 – INJURIES (1979)
    • THE REBELLION (1993)
    All the four of them,  early works by Michael Haneke,  were recently restored and will celebrate their first appearance on the big screen.

    FID Marseille and
    Munich IFF

    There are two Austrian world premieres on the festival schedules this week:
     
    b l u i s h, second feature by Lilith Kraxner & Milena Czernovsky will show at the FID Marseille (June 25 to 30) as an International Competition entry.
     
    GINA, also a second feature by Ulrike Kofler, is a contender at the Cinevision Competition at the Munich IFF (June 28 to July 7)

    JESSICA HAUSNER: Jury president at Locarno 77

    Austrian filmmaker Jessica Hausner will be the president of the Golden Leopard-jury at the 77th Locarno Film Festival (August 7 to 17, 2024).

    Artistic director Giona Nazarro states: A vital and restless filmmaker, Jessica Hausner has created a diverse body of work reflecting the most hidden aspects of contemporary society with extraordinary depth.

    Mo Harawe's feature debut is produced by Vienna-based FreibeuterFilm in collaboration with France, Germany and Somalia.

    PANDORA’S LEGACY by Angela Christlieb at IFFR Rotterdam

    Angela Christlieb’s complex mosaic on a fascinating family history unveilling G.W. Pabst’s multi-talented wife Trude celebrates its world premiere in the Cinema Regained section of the 53rd Rotterdam Film Festival. Two more brand-new Austrian films are screening at the IFFR Harbour program: GOD BETWEEN US by Rebecca Hirneise and VENI VIDI VICI by Daniel Hoesl and Julia Niemann.

    First Berlinale announcements with new films at the Panorama and Forum

    The 74th Berlinale Film Festival has unveiled first titels: Josef Hader’s second feature film ANDREA GETS A DIVORCE will celebrate its world premiere at the Berlinale Panorama. Anja Salomonowitz returns to the Forum with SLEEPING WITH A TIGER, a portrait dedicated to Austrian painter Maria Lassnig. Alexander Horwath will present his directorial debut HENRY FONDA FOR PRESIDENT, a personal essay on the United States.

    VENI VIDI VICI by Daniel Hoesl & Julia Niemann at Sundance

    This is the first out of eight world premieres of Austrian films to come within the next four weeks. VENI VIDI VICI the pungent new satire by Daniel Hoesl & Julia Niemann kicks off the amazing series of new Austrian films scheduled on the festival screens in January and February. VENI VIDI VICI celebrates its world premiere as a contender of the World Cinema Dramatic Competition at the Sundance Film Festival.

    European Excellency Award 2023
    European Original Score to CLUB ZERO | Markus Binder

    CLUB ZERO wins the European Excellence Award in the category  European Original Score for the film music composed by Markus Binder.

    The jury stated: The original score of CLUB ZERO is an essential and seamlessly integrated part of the film. The score effectively conveys the character of the teacher, magnetically pulling viewers into the narrative.

    THE STANDSTILL by Nikolaus Geyrhalter at DOK Leipzig

    When Covid reduced freedom of movement for all of us to a minimum, Nikolaus Geyrhalter captured the state of emergency in Vienna with his camera confronting us with the fragility of our supposed security.

    THE STANDSTILL celebrates world premiere as a Documentary Competition contender at DOK Leipzig. Also showing at Leipzig: VISTA MARE by Julia Gutweniger & Florian Kofler in the Audience Competition.
