The statement of the Austrian Oscar committee:
Marie Kreutzer has created an Elisabeth with  rough edges. Her Austrian empress is  a modern woman, impressively interpreted by Vicky Krieps, CORSAGE is a timeless approach on a woman's attempt to break out of the social shackles imposed on her.
Brilliantly directed and outstandingly cast, the film is compelling in its combination of striking images, first-rate costume, scenic and make-up design, and remarkable music. Through its poetic language, its elegant images and its visual and narrative power, CORSAGE succeeds in being an all-around exciting film experience with a contemporary and female gaze on both – the past and the present
