The film is set in the village of Kritzendorf and the surrounding area, a small community on the River Danube to the north-west of Vienna. The Vitovec family, neighbours of the filmmaker, run a vineyard. It's hard work. Manfred Neuwirth explores territory which is familiar to him, but some images from Aus einem nahen Land appear so unreal that the film almost looks like a work of science fiction.
