Kisangani Diary

Hubert Sauper
The last days of Zaire: A film about people on the run. Along an old rail-track south of Kisangani, ex-Stanleyville, "lost refugees" are discovered by an expedition of the UN. They are eighty thousand (!) Hutus from far away Rwanda. They are the last survivors of threee years of hunger and armed persecution throughout the vast Congo basin. The film follows their traces further in the equatorial rainforest, follows the hopeless attempts of help. It goes to enigmatic places where massacres had happened the night before. Nobody knows who was shooting. But by the time we see the film, most of those in it are no longer alive.
