Tyrol, 1908: After an absence of twenty years, 30-year-old Kaspar turns up at his father's deathbed to tell his fate as a 'swabian child'. As a boy, Kaspar's father sent him to Lake Constance, where he was sold at market as a laborer. The boy was exploited under miserable conditions by the farmer, his master, before he finally succeeded in fleeing.
