Tage mit Josef

Days With Josef

Josef Maier, born in the Innviertel (on the Austro-German border) in 1930, began working on farms when he was only a child. After many years as a labourer he went to live in the district old people's home in Gramastetten in 1986. From there he often travels around in the area, visiting a farmhouse almost every day, where he helps with the work, eats, drinks and tells stories. Josef has developed a very unconventional language, making reality accessible from an unaccustomed perspective. The trivia which he observes are intensified in his narrative so as to establish a point of view which probes into what is considered by most to be normal. The film approaches his person and his world in exactly the sense of the title, we encounter Josef in the manner of someone spending a few days in his company. What at first appears to be an alien way of life gradually becomes comprehensible as we are confronted with a thought-provoking individual approach to existence.
