Ulrich Seidl, bisher bekannt für seine provokanten Milieustudien an den Grenzen des Dokumentarfilms, hat das Genre gewechselt. In seinem ersten Spielfilm Hundstage hat der Filmemacher sechs Episoden lose miteinander vernetzt und zu einem unbequemen Sittenbild kleinbürgerlicher Durchschnittlichkeit verdichtet.

Michael Haneke's THE PIANO TEACHER (La Pianiste/ Die Klavierspielerin) was one of the most discussed films at this year's Cannes Film Festival. It also received three of the Festivals's top awards – the Grand Prix du Jury and Best Actor Awards for Isabelle Huppert and Benoit Magimel. A conversation with Michael Haneke.

Austrian director Michael Haneke was awarded the Grand Prix du Jury at the 54^th Cannes Film Festival for his film The Piano Teacher. In addition, Isabelle Huppert and Benoit Magimel received the best actor awards.

Elfriede Jelinek's novel The Piano Teacher was a sensation from the day it was published some 18 years ago. Now Austrian director Michael Haneke adapted her highly disturbing text for the screen. A conversation with Elfriede Jelinek.

Their first production, Lovely Rita, was invited to this year's Cannes Festival and will premiere in the Un Certain Regard section: What a start for coop99, a new Austrian production company founded by five young film professionals, who recently graduated from Vienna's Filmakademie. coop99 are Barbara Albert, Jessica Hausner, Martin Gschlacht, Gilbert Petutschnig and Antonin Svoboda.

Jessica Hausner hielt, was sie versprach. Nachdem Cannes' Nachwuchsschiene Cinéfondation schon 1999 ihren Kurzfilm Inter-View auszeichnete, ist sie nun zwei Jahre später wieder Gast beim prestigereichen Festival. Ihr Spielfilmdebüt Lovely Rita hat in der Reihe Un Certain Regard der Sélection officielle von Cannes Premiere.

Ruth Mader wählte für Null Defizit das Genre des Propagandafilms, um ein politisches Statement abzugeben und den Begriff Solidarität neu und emotional zu besetzen. Internationale Premiere des Kurzfilms ist in Cannes' Cinéfondation.

In seinem Dokumentarfilm Schwimmer in der Wüste begibt sich Kurt Mayer auf die Spuren des als "englischen Patienten" berühmten Abenteurers László Almásy und der Männerträume aus der Pionierzeit der Motoren.
